Stresses have to be exercised with understanding of the limits of the specific ceramics and the level that it can endure before fracture. The elastic plastic deformation behaviors of nano grained and coarse grained yttrium aluminum garnet yag transparent ceramics are investigated using nanoindentation. When the stress is sufficient to permanently deform the metal it is called plastic deformation.
